Dealing with panic attacks is not easy without help

There are many people in the world who suffer from severe and debilitating panic attacks. These attacks can feel like they come from nowhere, or the individual may be able to identify the exact reason that they experience panic. For some, panic only occurs in public places in which case those individuals may isolate themselves to their homes in order to avoid uncomfortable situations. Some people experience panic from obsessive worry, or feelings of no control, and this panic can crop up anywhere.

There is one fact that most who suffer from panic attacks would agree upon. The attack itself is terrifying. Individuals may feel extreme chest pain like a heart attack. Other feelings include feeling clausterphobic, feeling a shortness of breath, stomach pain, crying uncontrollably, or an immediate need to get out of the situation causing them discomfort. This can be humiliating or embarrassing for the person experiencing one of these episodes. They often realize that there is no real threat, but their body reacts this way, and it can feel like there is not a way to control their panic. This is simply not true. So what are some of the ways that people can reduce panic attacks.

Ways to Control Panic

* See a doctor-Any doctor, psychiatric or otherwise can treat mild to moderate panic through the use of medication. Sometimes the medication that is used is an antidepressant that also helps to control anxiety. A fast acting anxiety medication may also be given for emergency situations. Many times, doctors are reluctant to prescribe this class of medication as many of the medications are benzodiazepines and have a potential addictive quality.
* Seek out a qualified therapist-It is important to choose a therapist who has experience working with persons suffering from extreme anxiety and panic attacks. An individual needs to be patient in therapy and realize that there is not a quick fix. At the same time, it is important for the individual to decide if they are comfortable speaking to this therapist, and if not, shop around until the right counselor is found. Some people just click, and others do not.
* Recognize triggers-If an individual is aware of when, where, and why they are likely to experience panic, those situations can be avoided when possible, or if necessary, a trusted friend can accompany the individual to whatever situation that is. Often, panic is less likely when the person believes that there is someone who can help them out in a frightening situation.
* Use alternative supplements-There a number of herbal remedies that can be taken in pill or tea form that can have a calming effect. These include chamomile, and valerian root. Additionally certain vitamin combinations are thought to be effective in helping to lessen anxiety.
* Use self talk-When beginning to feel panic, the individual may be able to repeat a practiced script or mantra that helps them to make it through the threatening situation.
* Relaxation techniques-Many recommend that reducing stress and learning to relax can go a long way toward helping to decrease anxiety. The individual needs to identify ways that they can relax and take care of themselves.
